The Royal Guard Changing Ceremony at Gyeongbokgung Palace is one of Korea’s most iconic traditional cultural events. This ceremony faithfully reenacts the palace security rituals of the Joseon Dynasty and is performed in a grand scale for visitors from around the world.

With colorful traditional uniforms, ceremonial music, and precise military movements, the event offers a rare opportunity to experience Korea’s royal heritage in the heart of Seoul.

🛡 Main Programs & Schedule

Royal Guard Changing Ceremony

The largest ceremony of its kind, featuring approximately 70 royal guards and 15 traditional musicians. The program includes guard inspection, security confirmation of the palace gate, and the official changing of duty.

  • Duration: About 20 minutes

Gwanghwamun Guard Duty Ceremony

A traditional inspection ritual where guards’ weapons and discipline are examined, followed by a duty rotation.

  • Time: 11:00 / 13:00
  • Duration: About 10 minutes

Standing Guard Duty at Gwanghwamun

Royal guards remain on duty at Gwanghwamun Gate throughout the day. Even in rain or snow, guards perform their duty wearing traditional rain gear called Ujang.

Royal Guard Public Training

Visitors can observe guard training exercises and shift-change drills under the command of the Royal Guard Captain.
